The Fulmore Advanced Girls Choir has received a very special invitation from world renowned composer/ conductor, Francisco Núñez, to join in a performance of his composition, “Music for Treble Voices,” on the biggest stage in the world, Carnegie Hall in New York City! The Fulmore Choir will join others from around the country and the world to form the Distinguished Concert Singers International, which will perform the composition and will be conducted by Maestro Franciso Núñez. To prepare for this concert, the Fulmore Choir will travel to New York City for four days of intense rehearsals prior to the performance at 8:30 pm on January 20th, 2013. This is a unique opportunity for the Fulmore Middle School Advanced Girls Choir to work with one of America’s leading composer/conductors.
Why was the Fulmore Middle School Choir selected for this prestigious concert? Francisco Núñez, director of the Youth Choir of New York and 2011 MacArthur Award winner, encourages inner city youth to engage in the arts through singing. While at a conference in Texas, Maestro Núñez had the opportunity to hear the Fulmore Middle School Advanced Girls Choir perform under the direction of Ms. Yvette Carroll, the Choir Director at Fulmore Middle School. He was so impressed with the performance given by this inner city choir that he extended an invitation to the choir to join him in a performance in New York City. When asked about the singers at Fulmore Middle School, Maestro Núñez said, “I met Yvette Carroll at a Texas Music Educators Conference in Dallas, where I was giving a workshop, and had the privilege of observing her [as she was] working with her chorus of middle school children. What I saw were children who were fully engaged and singing beautifully under an enthusiastic and extremely skilled conductor, which is why I recommended that Ms. Carroll be invited to take her Fulmore Middle School Chorus to sing at Carnegie Hall next season. From this kind of experience with my own chorus, I know that singing at Carnegie Hall is something these children will never forget and will forever influence how they live their lives.”
Dr. Jonathan Griffith, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY), says this about the personal invitation extended to the choir, “These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community. This is an event of extreme pride for everybody and deserving of the community’s recognition and support.”
Everyone Goes (or No One Goes) Ms. Carroll accepted the invitation for the Advanced Girls Choir to attend this event under the condition that all girls be given equal opportunity to attend the event independent of financial resources. To achieve this requirement, the Fulmore Middle School community has committed itself to a fundraising campaign that will allow everyone to attend this event!
Fulmore Middle School Serves a Largely Economically Disadvantaged Community Fulmore Middle School is a Title I school that serves one of the most diverse student populations in the city of Austin, Texas. Nearly 76% of the students at Fulmore Middle School come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and, as such, their families need to concentrate their limited resources on providing basic needs. For this reason, only a small portion of the estimated $45,000 cost of the trip can be provided directly by the families. The bottom line is that in order for the Choir to attend this event, a significant portion of the proceeds will need to be raised from people like you.
How Can You Help! The Fulmore Middle School Community has launched a fundraising campaign with the goal of securing the required funds by November. We are feverishly planning our fundraising campaign at this time. We will be providing more details on fundraising events that you can get involved with in the near future. Please stay tuned and let Fulmore Falcons Sing!
